Bob Antol has been an avid amateur astronomer for over 50 years.
Bob is originally from Des Moines, Iowa.
He attended Iowa State University majoring in Mathematics.
After graduating from Iowa State in 1978, Bob started working for IBM in East Fishkill. He worked in the Electronic Design Automation organization as a Senior Software Engineer. After working at IBM for 35 years, Bob finally retired.
Bob is married to his lovely wife, Barbara (a Math major from Pace University and also a retired IBM software engineer after 33 years). They celebrated 30 years of marriage last May. They share their house with 5 cats (Tycho, Sterling, Capella, Ramsey and Mothra) and live in Poughquag.
In April 1985, Bob was on an expedition to the North Pole. Bob has stood on top of the world!
In 2005, Bob and Barb built an addition onto their house. Incorporated onto the corner of the addition is a 2 story octagonal tower with a 16-foot Ash dome observatory. It took four months from groundbreaking to achieving first light. The observatory is known as "Stargate 4173 at Grimaldi Tower". Bob wrote about this (from design to construction to first light) for the book entitled "My Heavens!: The Adventures of a Lonely Stargazer Building an Over-the-Top Observatory" by Gordon Rogers (refer to Chapter Eleven) (and it is still available at Amazon!).
In March 2006, the observatory was featured in the Poughkeepsie Journal ("Stars are only 13 steps away").
In June 2013, Bob and his observatory were featured in Iowa State's "VISIONS Across America". The image from this project is currently on display in Carver Hall's Sprague Room (the Math building).
In March 2015, the observatory was featured in the Chronogram magazine under the title "Stargate 4173 - A Home Observatory in Poughquag".
In April 2016, Bob made a presentation at NEAIC (NorthEast Astro Imaging Conference) in Suffern, NY. His talk was entitled "High Resolution Hydrogen-Alpha Solar Imaging".
Bob is currently on the Advisory Council for the Department of Mathematics at Iowa State University. Last October, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award in the Department of Math from the University.
And finally, Bob's website is stargate4173.com.
